Join us for easy and inexpensive recipes you are sure to love! This week for What's Cookin', Carroll County, I'm sharing what may be my absolute favorite breakfast food, French Toast! It's not a complicated dish, but it can be tricky to get a truly tasty French Toast, so I wanted to share my process!
French Toast
Ingredients:
6-7 pieces bread - at least 1/2" thick
1 1/2 cups milk
4 yolks from 4 large eggs
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Recipe:
1. Dry your bread out if necessary. Place in oven at the lowest temperature setting for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, being careful not to brown it.
2. Mix the milk, egg yolks, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a bowl, and whisk thoroughly. Pour the resulting mixture in a pie plate or similar dish, for easy dipping.
3. Spray a pan with cooking non-stick spray, place over medium heat, and drop a pad of butter in. Once the butter has melted and stopped foaming, it's ready for the French Toast.
4. Allow French Toast to soak in the custard, 10-20 seconds per side. You want the bread to be saturated all the way through, but not completely soggy.
5. Drop in the pan and allow to cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, flipping only after it browns. Once cooked, place each slice in an oven pre-heated to 350 degrees. This will keep each piece warm and ensure the center is fully cooked.
6. Once the last slice is done pan-frying, let cook in the oven for a few more minutes, then remove and cover with whatever topping you prefer - butter, powdered sugar, maple syrup, berries, your choice! Serve and enjoy!
