This week, we're doing one of my long-time favorite appetizers, mozzarella sticks! I only very recently tried to make these for myself, and I was very pleasantly surprised how simple they were!
Ingredients: 16 oz. block of mozzarella cheese, 3/4 cup of Italian-style bread crumbs, 2/3 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of corn starch, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of milk, vegetable oil, salt, pepper
Recipe:
- Slice your mozzarella block into thin sticks. I find it easiest to cut the block into 6 even sections, then cut each section into thirds, so you end up with 18 roughly equal sticks.
- Whisk the two eggs and milk together, add salt and pepper to taste.
- Mix the flour and corn starch together in a bowl, add salt and pepper to taste. Pour the bread crumbs in a separate bowl.
- Soak each cheese stick in the eggs, then cover in the flour mixture. Make sure the entire cheese stick is covered.
- Take the flour-covered cheese sticks, soak in the egg mixture again, then cover in the bread crumbs. Be sure the eggs are sticking to the cheese stick, it may take a few tries before it stops just running off.
- Store the mozzarella sticks in an airtight container and place in the freezer for at least 2 hours.
- Pour enough vegetable oil in a pan to cover the mozzarella sticks entirely, then heat up to 365 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Fry each mozzarella stick for 50 - 60 seconds, then remove and place on a paper-tower covered plate.
- Serve with marinara sauce and enjoy!
