Program Description
Description
From 1908 to 1940, a customer could actually order a complete house from the Sears Modern Homes and Building Plans catalog! Everything needed, right down to the nails and paint, was shipped by rail to local railroad towns across America, including Mount Airy. Sears promised that working without a carpenter and only rudimentary skills, a person could build themselves a beautiful house for a reasonable price. This online presentation will discuss how this amazing feat was accomplished and will give local examples of Sears catalog houses.
