James McBride, author, musician, and screenwriter, visits to discuss Deacon King Kong, his first novel since winning the National Book Award.

In September 1969, a cranky old church deacon shoots a drug dealer in the courtyard of a south Brooklyn housing project. The causes and aftermath of the shooting unfold in Deacon King Kong, told with insight and wit, and ultimately demonstrating that love and faith live in all of us.

McBride is the author of Miracle at St. AnnaSong Yet Sung, the Anisfield-Wolf-winning memoir The Color of Water, and National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.  He is an alum of Oberlin College, and he is currently a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University.

This event is a partnership between Penguin Random House, Carroll Community College, A Likely Story Bookstore, and Carroll County Public Library. This special author event kicks off the Penguin Random House Book Fair. Click here for full details on the Book Fair.
