Program Description
Description
Join author and historian Stephen Evangelista for a fascinating event featuring his book, No Sacrifice Too Great: The Letters and Diary of Sgt. Albert Aaron Straight. This compelling new book reveals the extraordinary story of Sergeant Straight, a Rhode Island volunteer artilleryman who commanded the famed Gettysburg Gun on July 3, 1863. Through his vivid letters and diary entries, Straight offers a rare firsthand window into the experiences of Union soldiers during the American Civil War.
During this program, Stephen will discuss the discovery and preservation of Straight’s writings, the historical significance of the Gettysburg Gun (the first Civil War relic and the only artillery piece still on its original gun carriage known to have seen action at Gettysburg), and how this remarkable narrative was brought to publication. The session will include a reading, Q&A, and book signing.
Perfect for readers interested in American history, military history, and true stories of extraordinary service.
This program is part of the Carroll 250 Speaker Series celebrating the United States Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the 1776 United States Declaration of Independence.
