Program Description

Description

Barry Knight will review some key milestones of leather making, examine the main disciplines of tanning, and their evolution over time. He will also discuss how leather was made at the Shriver Tannery in Union Mills. Barry is a recognized expert in the production of tanned leather products. He recently retired after a long career in tanning, starting literally in the pits in an English tannery and rising to the very top, becoming president of the United Kingdom Leather Federation and a Fellow of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists. Barry works as a technical consultant for tanneries based both in the U.K. and Argentina, specializing in heavy (thick) leather of all tanning disciplines for purposes such as shoes, belts, saddlery and industrial drive belts.
