Program Description

Description

This presentation will address a brief history of espionage through the ages, from its inception in Biblical times through the 20th century. This is part two of the history of spying. We’ll discuss the beginnings of the US intelligence community and, specifically, the CIA and FBI and their role in obtaining and protecting the nation’s secrets. We will also look at key events affecting US policy in the later half of the last century. Finally, we’ll look at counterintelligence: what it is, what it does, and how it works to protect the national security. This last item will include some case studies of the more infamous spies in our nation’s history: who they were, why did they do what they did, what motivates someone to betray their country and what risks/rewards (if any) they enjoy. An open discussion will follow the presentation.
