Program Description

Description

Dr. James Gibb will describe the archaeological search for, and discovery of, the copper mine at Mineral Hill in Eldersburg, MD.

High on a steep hill and down the slopes into the City of Baltimore’s Liberty Reservoir are the remains of a copper mine. Started in the early 18th century, this mine provided this essential metal that likely supported the United Colonies during the formation of our country and America’s military in World War I as the nation moved onto the international stage. This illustrated presentation provides the first public look at what this site looked like and how it may have operated over the course of two centuries.

Presented in conjunction with St. Mary's Library.
