Program Description

Description

The 1862 two-day battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack (CSS Virginia) was history's first duel between ironclad warships and arguably the most important naval battle of the American Civil War. Though the battle itself was inconclusive, the Battle of Hampton Roads between the ironclads signaled a new age of naval warfare had arrived. Guest speaker Captain Thom Mitton will speak on Confederate Admiral Franklin Buchanan and his role during the Battle of the Ironclads. Be sure to take a look at Captain Mitton's Battle of the Ironclads collection on display in the Westminster Branch's display case during the month of March.
